Bio
Wildfoodplants.com is written, photographed, filmed and edited by me…Sunny Savage. I love this planet we call home, and enjoy sharing that love with others. I see wild food as a way to connect us more deeply with place, with ourselves, and as a catalyst for our rapidly evolving consciousness. These views are brought out in my upcoming television series called Hot on the Trail with Sunny Savage. It will air on Veria, a natural lifestyle network on DISH channel 9575.
I am a descendant of Thomas Savage, who was on the second boat into Jamestown in 1607. At 13 he was exchanged with Namontack, a Powhatan boy, to learn the language and lifeways of the Native folks in the Jamestown area. It is said that Savage had a close relationship with Chief Powhatan, as well as his famous daughter Pocahontas. He worked as a translator in the area, and I see myself as carrying on his spirit of adventure and diplomacy. I recently founded Savage Design, Inc…an eco-conscious clothing and design company working with tribal folks from around the globe.
Born to back-to-the-lander parents in the middle of the Smoky Hills State Forest, I spent my early years without electricity and running water. At 18 I took off to Antarctica for a year, and basically have been traveling as much as possible ever since…making it to all 7 continents before 30! I obtained my BS in Dietetics from the College of St. Catherine and my MS in Nutrition Education from the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. My Master’s work focused on developing educational models for recommending antioxidant-rich wild food plants for immunocompromised folks. Some additional interests have included teaching yoga, becoming certified in Native American Permaculture, advanced SCUBA certification, motorcycle riding, and more. I filmed, edited, and produced my first documentary in 2006 called the Local Food Challenge (This film takes about 20 minutes to load), which aired on Lakeland Public Television. It highlights seven of us on the White Earth Reservation, who ate foods grown within 250 miles of where we lived for one year.
I live for the thrill of life, seeking out the adventures that seem to pop up around every corner. I feel deeply connected to the wild plants and use them, dance with them, and talk to them every day of my life. Join me on this adventure in untaming your life. Live the savage life!
